Remember the piano lessons you had as a child? Mine were awful. I trudged half way across town to Mrs.McClure’s on Churxh Street in Cowansville where sometimes a rap on the knuckles was issued after a wrong note. My piano sits empty a lot as after I had a stroke as I just can’t focus on the notes.
But I’m glad I had the chance to learn to play an instrument as a child. Some things we do as children have wonderful ways of sticking around and continue to shape our experience as we move through the various stages of life. What are your memories?
Thanks Stuart McIntosh for sending all these great old photos of music books.
These two music books were published in 1888 and in 1886 respectively. My mother recounted how in her early years her mother would have them gather around the piano on Sunday and sing together… probably from music in these books. My… how times have changed.
This music book contains a dictionary of Italian, French, German, English and other worldly musical terms. Amazing how music crosses all borders.
The words obviously depict the country of origin.
In 1730 Charles Wesley wrote the hymn Hark! The Herald Angels Sing – while inspired from walking to church one Christmas morning.
Music also tells so many stories
This music book demonstrates also the activity and moral structure of the time period… containing music like Camptown Races and Sinful to Flirt.

Hi Linda. I have two pictures of my Dad (Cam Hughes) in a band called the Top Hats back in 1954. I’m wondering if you can post these pictures in hopes that someone may know the other band members. My dad played the piano.

So wonderful to see pictures posted of the people who were part of Carleton Place

Ted Graham was a music teacher in Arnprior, and continues to live there now.
The man on the left is my Dad, Jim White not his brother Eddie White. Both were musicians back in the day.

I was honoured yesterday to meet Michael Costello who played the piano at St. James with Mrs. Bryce. When I heard him play all I could think of was his Uncle Bernie Costello and how he used to play at the Garage on the corner of Bell and Bridge all those years.

His looks never changed. This man will be honoured some day with his name affixed to to something in his hometown. A well known and respected man.
Andy Williams
My Dad, Clarence Williams died 14 years ago tomorrow. He played with the Country Pals, Charlie Finner, Bernie Costello, Jim White, and most musicians in the area. Dad may be gone, but the music goes on for generations. Believe me, he is never far, when I sing and play my guitar.

Today our hearts have broken with the passing of our dad, husband, brother, grandpa and great-gramps. We will miss the music, love and laughter that dad brought to the world. Rip Bernie Costello forever in our hearts. I love you dad
