Meet the Beckwitch at Swirlicious and Friends Annual Shopping Event!

Look what’s coming to Swirlicious and Friends Annual Shopping Event at 151 Bridge Street in Carleton Place on October 31! THIS ISN’T A CRAFT SHOW– THIS IS A SHOPPPPING EVENT:)

Yesterday I wrote about the Witches of Rochester Street. Most of that story was true, with the exception of Martha Stewart. As far as I know, Martha’s spatula has never hit the town lines. Last week however, I met the closest I will ever come to pioneer sustainable agriculture advocate Alice Waters. If you have never heard about her, it is because she is an icon in the United States.

Water’s philosophy is that cooking should be based on the finest and freshest seasonal ingredients that are produced sustainably and locally. She is a passionate advocate for a food economy that is “good, clean, and fair.” For nearly forty years, her restaurant, Chez Panisse, in Berkeley, Ca. has helped create a community of scores of local farmers and ranchers whose dedication to sustainable agriculture assures the restaurant a steady supply of fresh and pure ingredients.

Our local “Beckwitches” are actually comprised of husband and wife Penny and Greg Foster. They make their products together, and have even involved their children into their business. In addition to the soaps and hand made goods, they also branched out to garlic and heirloom vegetables. This year The Beckwitch grew glass gem corn, about 15 varieties of tomatoes, and all their own hot peppers for their infused salts.

Greg and Penny are Beaver leaders with 1st Beckwith Beavers. They are also giving their garden education to the Beaver colony as well. They already brought them to the dairy farm to give them a taste of farming and they even milked the cows. They have five children ages 2 through 18, and built their forever home at the front of the family dairy farm.

.

The Beckwitch’s concept was built on upcycling and being environmentally responsible. They try and buy local where they can, they re purpose as much as possible (chip bag pouches for instance) and want to promote edible propagation. They harvest and preserve most everything, dehydrate what they can’t and are known to gift their produce within the community to others.

This gifting concept led them to another idea – The “Free in CP – Gracious Giving and Receiving” FaceBook Group. They have almost 300 members as of today (all local to CP) and the group runs on kindness and kind words – and everything is free! It is a free cycling group with manners (and they do enforce it!). They have met so many individuals through their group and believe it is bringing the community together, not to mention reducing waste in our landfills. The Free in CP group has also provided Penny an avenue to request needed items for her Angel Gowns, where she makes angel gowns and wraps for babies born too soon or still from donated wedding gowns.

In 1996, Alice Water’s commitment to education led to the creation of The Edible Schoolyard at Berkeley’s Martin Luther King, Jr., Middle School: a one-acre garden, an adjacent kitchen-classroom, and an “eco-gastronomic” curriculum. By actively involving a thousand students in all aspects of the food cycle, The Edible Schoolyard is a model public education program that instills the knowledge and values we need to build a humane and sustainable future.
Her first school garden project was at St. Gregory’s school in Carleton Place where she helped 277 students make classroom gardens. There was themes like: pizza garden, herb garden and perennial garden, with the hopes that she can convince the schools to make outdoor gardens at each school.

This serves many purposes as it not only taught the students about edible propagation but high school students manage the gardens over the summer and earn their volunteer credits too. Jessica Pettes, (wife of Chef Dusty Pettes) graciously offered to assist her with the school garden projects.

If this wasn’t enough, Penny also works full time as a senior analyst with National Defence and a full time graduate student at the University of Ottawa. This is her fourth university degree. Her previous research pursuits were on a gendered perspective of mentoring women, and she is an academic and a published author of two peer reviewed articles on the subject. Her current research through the Institute of Feminist and Gender Studies at the University of Ottawa involves the gendered perspectives of entrepreneurial identity, to help contribute to women specific business research.

What do Greg and Penny do in their spare time? According to Penny they sleep sometimes!

Shop Till You Drop With My Girl Teri White—Swirlicious and Friends Annual Shopping Event!

Standard

Look what’s coming to Swirlicious and Friends Annual Shopping Event at 151 Bridge Street in Carleton Place on October 31! THIS ISN’T A CRAFT SHOW– THIS IS A SHOPPPPING EVENT:)

The first time I  saw Teri White was when I was peeking through my kitchen window when Blair White first brought her home to meet his Mother Joyce White. I remember saying to Ange,

“Holy cow that is one hot looking woman Blair just brought home!”

I am not going to tell you how many years I have known her as this would “out” our ages. Not that I hide anything, and yes I was around when they discovered the wheel.Through the years I went to weddings, funerals, and talked to her as neighbours do when she came to visit Joyce. I knew she was once a florist in Perth, and then became the Pampered Chef icon of  this area. Whenever there was something buzzing Teri was there.

I always thought I knew Teri White– but did I really know her? I don’t really think I ever knew the force that lives inside of this woman. I found out quickly when we put on the Ladies Who Lunch event in June. For those that don’t know me– it was a personal emotional struggle. But through the darkest of moments, Teri was there beside me online or offline offering me this single thought—-and I will always thank her for that LOL.

Anywhere she goes with her pop-up boutique on wheels, Teri White creates a unique environment. She treats her customers to what you can’t find locally at prices you can actually afford. Whether it be home or office trunk shows, or even fundraising opportunities–Teri created Swirlicious to meet the needs of the person who wants something special that is hand stamped.

Teri listens to what people want, and delivers products that women love. “It’s not all about me,” as she says, so her one-of-a-kind hand stamped pieces lets your imagination run wild. Her exceptional flair for design and attention to detail make each item as special as you. AND- you can believe her when she says it’s not all about me a I have found out personally.

As a designer in many aspects of her life, Teri became intrigued with finding unique items that would stand out in a crowd while being affordable and fun to wear. Rather than scooping up fast-fashion pieces that could fall apart in months, she offers quality product that will last for seasons.

As a bonus, shoppers local to the Ottawa Valley, have a chance to come and visit her home studio. Teri will always be there on hand to help customers style their choices of either jewelery, purses, hats, scarves and more. Swirlicious offers fashion and flair with an element of surprise.

Teri has been in business since 2006 originally on Etsy and a full online web site for the past 2 years. Her business is independently owned and operated (with a small staff of a husband & 2 boys to help out.) Swirlicious is currently open by appointment, so please contact her for your personal shopping experience.

Teri will have her Swirlicious goodies there in full force. I am going to be there also selling my books, photos of Carleton Place, fudge and a few one of a kind outrageous hats that might decorate a wall instead of a head LOL.. See you there!

I had to write about this, because Teri White has some amazing mascara that’s supposed to do a “makeover” on your eyelashes. It’s often referred to as Younique 3D Mascara.

I’m always skeptical of new products, but I was initially intrigued because who doesn’t want longer and thicker lashes?  If you haven’t already guessed, the product I’m talking about is the Younique 3D Fiber Lashes Mascara. It’s gluten free, cruelty free, and does not contain any harsh chemicals. You can also wear it with contacts.  I also wanted to see if it was worth all the hype.

hqdefault

The before and after pictures I’ve come across were pretty amazing. Thanks to Teri, I had the Younique 3D mascara in hand, and I said to myself…“let’s see how this goes”.

It’s a great option instead of wearing false eyelashes for events, and so much easier. Would I buy it again? Yes, definitely. It’s easy, looks great and it is right up there with the Dior mascara I used to use years ago. You can only buy it from Younique vendors like Teri— so come on down and see her at Swirlicious and Friends Annual Shopping Event. Younique also has a great make-up line and I am really trying to look away– it’s like a train wreck– impossible to do!  Look at this stuff!

Come meet the Walen Gals!
The story of Jamberry Nails begins with three sisters who possess distinct personal tastes, but share a love for style. After an expensive afternoon together at the nail salon, Lyndsey, Christy and Keri vowed to find a simpler, more cost effective way to keep their hands looking polished, while still spending time together.

After lots of trial and error, the proprietary nail wraps of Jamberry Nails launched in late 2010. The DIY, at-home application and incredible variety of designs caught on quickly and sales soared. A new era of nail art was born.

2015_homepagebanner_halloween

Gone are the days of nails that chip and flake after only a few days! Gone are the days of the single colored manicure. Gone are the mani/pedis that take all afternoon and most of your cash too! Jamberry nail wraps arm you with style and confidence while demanding very little of your time or money.

We haven’t plunged into the world of sword fights and “savvy” pirates like Captain Jack Sparrow. But seeing this pirate chest reminds reminds us of the exquisite jewelry you will see at Swirlicious and Friends Annual Shopping Event on October 31.

Her motto is: quality craftsmanship makes nicer jewelry. She began by taking a few jewelry classes to learn techniques and the rest is from her inspiration. She is a member of Capital Artisans Guild and Ottawa Crafts and Collectibles Guild. They say that jewelry has the power to make you feel unique– I say jewelry takes people’s minds off your wrinkles. After all, people will stare, make it worth their while in Ghislaine’s creations.

Direct Sales — Fake or Real Job?

Standard

My friend Teri White is having her annual Swirlicious and Friends Annual Shopping Event on October 31st at the Carambeck School in Carleton Place. The issue about direct sellers came up once again, and I felt I had to expand my initial essay on it. You either love them or hate them, but people have to realize that NOTHING has really changed since your Grandma was selling Watkins Products.

Remember the Tupperware parties, Amway, Avon and Watkins products? Things haven’t really changed from days gone by. If you’re a mom who’s always wanted a work-at-home opportunity, you may have found it frustrating when searching for work from home jobs. Tupperware conjures up an era when throwing a party to sell airtight storage containers was the pinnacle of a lady’s social calendar. Think Tupperware, and the associations are of a retro, pre-feminist world in which housewives briefly put aside their aprons to discuss the best way to store their husband’s dinner ingredients.

tupperware_party

These new direct sales companies provide a way for lots of women to earn a little bit of income, which I can appreciate. But some say they are tired of getting hit up to buy items by their friends!  I have a hard time seeing the difference between people posting about their direct sales and someone constantly posting trying to sell their used stuff? Just unfollow the person or defriend them if it gets that bad. All the women I know that do direct sales, are doing it to make money to support their families as any other job full time or part time. Is it a fake job? I have several friends who own legitimate businesses – brick and mortar stores etc. So I would say that is their “real job”. They email me about their business all the time, invite me to fashion shows, sales etc. What makes that different then direct sales? So what equals a real job vs fake job?  Is it a salary amount?  Hours put in amount?  If so what is the amount? I am curious.

The Home Based Business phenomenon has never been as strong as it is right now. Not just in the US and Canada, but throughout the world. The reason direct sales is so popular has to do not only with the benefits to the people selling it, but also the benefits to the companies that make the products or services. The sales model allows these companies a low risk, low cost method of expanding their sales force throughout the country.

I had a friend who lost their job. Out of boredom she went to a direct sales party a friend was giving and enjoyed herself. After thinking a long time about what people would think of her,  she decided that  she needed to have fun in her life and do something to keep her busy until she found work. A funny thing happened along the way. She began to really like what she was doing and as time passed she was actually making some money.

In order to really be successful, as with anything, you need to put in time. You have to do shows, parties, and network. A lot of time is needed almost everyday to call people about parties and orders. So yes, it is more flexible than a 9-5 job, but it can take just as much time. I also think there is a lot of confusion out there about direct sales (party plan, door to door, vendors at events) vs. network marketing or multi-level-marketing whose focus is on selling the business opportunity more than actual products. Some reps from those companies can be pretty hard core, where as in most direct sales/party plan companies, their focus is on the products.  Although they do recruit other reps, it is so that they can sell the products in their areas and build their own career.

In reality, are things really that different than when Mom sold Tupperware? Like the internet, things change, and I commend all of those Mothers trying to stay home, and attempting to make their mark in the world. We women are no longer in an era in which female lives revolved around domestic drudgery. Carry on girls!
