Shenanigans of the Monday Night Town Hall Opening

October 29,1897-Almonte Gazette

Livery rigs were at a premium in town on Monday night owing to the number of Almonters who drove up to attend the Carleton Place concert. Three of our young townsmen, probably unable to secure another vehicle, had a lively ride to and from the junction town that evening by means of a railway tricycle they were fortunate enough to secure.

They did the distance to C. P. in twenty minutes, we understand, and on the return trip were spurting to lower the record, when, opposite Mr. Wylie’s factory on the outskirts of the town, there was a collision with one of those pretty little stripe-backed animals known technically as the **Mephitis Americana, and the animal shuffled off its coil with more speed than the spurters deemed necessary under the circumstances.

For some time after the unfortunate accident the survivors were threatened with social ostracism by their many friends, but the burial of at least two suits of clothes and persistent and well-directed attempts at fumigation have rendered such a contingency unnecessary. We have not heard in what dialect the owner of the triple wheeler clothed his thoughts when he set out on his next trip, and we are ready to believe that the local C.P. residents are dumb as an oyster over the affair, doubtless owing to the fact that it is against the rules of the company to give every Richard, Tom or Henry particulars as to collisions, washouts or other accidents !

Shenanigans ran amuck in small towns, even in those days, and this was quite the story between a Smiths Falls shoe store and a member of council. It went back and forth for a long time, and the whole issue smelled badly from the beginning. on october 11, 1897, four of the most important witnesses failed to show up? Things do not seem to change do they? You only need to look at the news clipping in historical facts to understand there was history to one W.E. Brown alderman from Smiths Falls and when witnesses do not show up–well, it’s hard to make a case.

The record here commences at the circus in the summer of 1885– from the Almonte Gazette

Shell Games at The Circus

The circus on Saturday in Carleton Place was accompanied by a host of banditti who robbed the people right and left. The number who grabbed at the enticing shadows was legion. Some lost $5, some $10, others $15 and $20 ; one man lost $40. An Elder lost $5, a sexton $5. The losses of these innocents may be multiplied by four or five for rough conversion to present currency values.

The circus itself was billed as “W. H. Harris Absolutely New World Famous Nickel-Plate Shows. Menagerie of Trained Wild animals and Congress of Celebrated Equestrain Stars. The only Umbrella-Eared Elephant. The largest and most savage den of Lions in captivity, entered and performed daily. The handsomest Royal Bengal Tigers on this continent, pulling against The only Male and Female Samson Horses and Elephants. M’lle. Dora, Wonderful Tatooed Fejee Island Cannibal. Performances at 2 and 8 p.m.”

August, 1899

There was a small burglary act some time between Saturday evening and Monday morning at the C.P.R. freight shed in Carleton Place. They took a few coppers, which was the personal property of the office clerk, and carried off two bottles of beer. It is assumed to be the work of a couple of thirsty young men due to the torments of a droughty weather. After the removal of evil spirits they attacked Mr. Zahalan’s awning.

It is proper that these evening disturbers be corrected, and quickly. These double-guilty, grown-up night howlers might possibly be the scallywags of recent troubles on Bridge Street. Residents on our main street are tired of the frequent screeching and other disorderly conduct they have been tortured with in their hours of sleep and rest. It is time something was done to abate the nuisance. A fellow may be a owl, a night hawk, or any other kind of bird, but it does not follow that they need to be a whole bunch of screech owls either.
