Race the Runway! Keep Calm and Race on!

Unless you’re a big car racing fan, the whole thing about going up and down, or all around a track might seem somewhat pointless to you. Professional racing has become a group of big-name, big-money brands racing around for no other reason than entertainment and bragging rights. Imagine if your son was a non-professional driver involved in one of these races like Race the Runway at the Russ Beach Airport.

It began innocently enough when both my sons drove around the yard in their toy cars when they were young. Then it progressed to Dad, pass me the superglue, she needs welding!”  Both also played video car racing games for practice – did you know Mario Kart is one of the most realistic teachers out there for race car driving? However, in real life, throwing turtle shells at your opponents and letting a monkey drive a car will get you disqualified from most car races.

I knew when my sons got passionately involved with cars I would never have to worry about them looking for money for illicit things because they spent it all on  car engines and accessories. Then the periods of the youngest wailing down residential streets, tires squealing around corners soon disappeared. He finally found places to get those urges out of his system as race tracks will let people like him on the track — in his own car, no less to drive like the proverbial bat out of Hell.

As parents we hoped that they both understood that Vin Diesel was actually not doing any of that amazing stuff you saw in the film The Fast & Furious, but sometimes you just didn’t want to break their hearts. Of course the primary goal of the Fast & Furious movies is simply to look cool, but pretty much everything you saw those drivers do would be a really big mistake in real life.

Now adults, the oldest Schuyleur owns a car dealership, and the youngest Perry, pulled up to his first Race the Runway in a Honda Civic instead of an Italian sports car a few years ago and placed 7th.  Perry knew that newbies beginning high-performance driving in a Ferrari is like trying to learn calculus before you’ve mastered arithmetic– if miscalculating a derivative could send you to a fiery death.

He was clever in understanding that showing up in let’s say, a shamefully under-rated ride like a Honda would teach him far more than scrimping and saving to buy a Porsche. Last year Perry ended up winning Race the Runway and I knew if his father was still alive he would have been beaming.

Even though their Mother gets another load of grey hair each time she sees them both in fast cars she knows that her sons believe that if you have everything under control, you are not moving fast enough. After all driving a car is boring unless you are going 242kph on the Smiths Falls Russ Beach Airport Runway upside down. Like they say,“Drive it like you  stole it!”

Today is Part 4 in a new series called Armchair Tourism in Carleton Place. Did you know we have airports in the area?

When I was a child my father used to take us to the local Cowansville, Quebec airport and when we went to visit my Mother in the hospital in Montreal he would bring us to the Dorval airport. We all used to love watching the planes. Did you know we have an airport in Carleton Place?

Carleton Place Airport, (TC LID: CNR6), is located 1.5 nautical miles (2.8 km; 1.7 mi) southeast of Carleton Place, Ontario, Canada, west of Ottawa. To put it in layman’s terms its 1998 9th Line in Beckwith- Their Facebook page

Yesterday through the graciousness of the Sky Pilots of Carleton Place, Bill and Carole Flint, Steve and I got to see Carleton Place first hand through the skies. The uncontrolled skies that is. I had no idea that the air above is regulated into classes. Smaller planes fly in uncontrolled airspace. What is that?

Uncontrolled airspace is airspace where an Air Traffic Control (ATC) service is not deemed necessary or cannot be provided for practical reasons. According to the airspace classes set by ICAO both class F and class G airspace are uncontrolled. It is the opposite of controlled airspace which the big guys fly in.

ATC does not exercise any executive authority in uncontrolled airspace, but may provide basic information services to aircraft in radio contact. Flight in uncontrolled airspace will typically be under VFR. Aircraft operating under IFR should not expect separation from other traffic: however in certain uncontrolled airspace this might be provided on an ‘as far as is practical’ advisory basis.

cesna.jpg

They fly a Cessna 172. The Cessna 172 Skyhawk is a four-seat, single-engine, high wing, fixed-wing aircraft made by the Cessna Aircraft Company. First flown in 1955, more Cessna 172s have been built than any other aircraft.

Measured by its longevity and popularity, the Cessna 172 is the most successful aircraft in history.  As of 2015, Cessna, and its partners, had built more than 43,000.

Bet you didn’t know that. Well, neither did I-thank god for Wikipedia— I am not that smart LOL.

carolecesna.jpg

So this is the other Sky Pilot of Carleton Place Carole Flint, or better yet, the First Officer of Air Flint.

They fly out of Russ Beach- the Smiths Falls/ Montague airport. I thought that airport was run by a bunch of rich muky mucks. Well, it isn’t. This airport is run by volunteers (mostly pilots) –and Smiths Falls-Montague Airport Commission is entrusted to the control and management of the landing grounds at the Russ Beach Smiths Falls/Montague Airport.

It is also home to Car Show and Top Speed Runway Challenge-Race the Runway which my son won last year. Okay, a mother does what a mother feels she has to do when she loves her kids, and Perry is probably shaking his head right now. But, if you have never been to this–better come on down August 13th–it’s fun for the whole family!

It’s not too often two members of a family get to ride down this runway–so, thanks to Bill and Carole for letting me experience what my son feels racing down this runway. Only this time, my hair did not turn grey going down it with Bill– like it does when I watch my son race.

Did you now Search and Rescue also drops in and says hi and does some training at the airport? So why am I telling you all this? Because like writing history every day, you need some background about our Sky Pilots of Carleton Place. So now on with the show as they say…

And we are off…

I know it’s a vertical video. I keep telling people to hold their iPhones sideways and I keep making the same mistakes. Blah!!
