Mrs. Jarley created a sensation with her waxworks in the Lanark town hall on Friday evening, when they exhibited a special feature at an entertainment given by St. John’s Episcopal church, under the management of Rev. Mr. and Mrs. Heaven.
Mrs. Jarley certainly had a ‘‘marvellous and stupendous collection” of automata. The graphic description given by this aggressive dame of the different characters amused the large listening audience, and merriment waxed to a high pitch. When the figure of her long lamented late husband, Mr. Jarley, was brought forward the sight proved too much for the poor lone widow and she wept bitterly. So did John, an assistant, who could not bear the sight of a woman’s tears.
Mrs. Weekes, of Carleton Place, impersonated Mrs. Jarley, and Mr. C. Forbes took the part of John. The other portion of the program was devoted to singing and instrumental music, also a pretty Maypole drill by a number of little girls. The Misses Strong, Carleton Place, were loudly encored for their duets. They -sang “Goo Goo Eyes” in a manner which left nothing to be desired, and have established themselves as warm favourites here in the village. Master W. Buffam sang well “Two little shoes of blue.”
Messrs. Patterson and C. Forbes gave a duet “Tie Pilot Brave” and Mr. C. Forbes entertained the audience with some new songs and sayings. Altogether the entertainment was a most enjoyable one, and Mr. and Mts. Heaven are to be congratulated on its success. The accompanists: were Miss Drummond, of Perth, and Miss Laura Doiway, Miss Maud Richardson and Miss Montgomery, of Lanark. Mr. R. Beatty filled .the chair. Proceeds raised were over sixty dollars.
