Built nearly a century ago by the Douglas family, this gorgeous farmhouse has undergone quite the transformation. It originally sat approximately 1 kilometre south of its current location. During the winter months in the 1940’s, with the use of sleighs and horses, this old girl was moved by the Douglas family to where she stands today. The current homeowners purchased this home in 1990 from the Douglas family descendants. They immediately began refurbishing the old structure, adding an addition complimenting the existing architectural design. The front living room was previously the sitting room plus kitchen. The new kitchen was relocated to where the old summer kitchen sat and in 2013, a huge western facing sunroom complete with fireplace was built to showcase the amazing sunsets.
The lady of the house begins decorating for Christmas in the middle of November. Deep window sills are adorned with themed vignettes. The huge natural tree in the sunroom is quite the showstopper! Several smaller trees throughout the home along with sentimental decor, tells the story that Christmas for this family is truly a special time of year!
316 Justin Drive, Carleton Place – House Number 2
This beautiful home was built by Grizzly Homes 6 years ago and when it became available on the market, the current homeowners snatched it up in a heartbeat. It was love at first site! The 1,800 square foot open concept bungalow, plus duplicate square footage walkout basement, is truly an entertainers dream. With five bedrooms and three bathrooms, this large family home is the perfect spot for hosting family and friends. Since moving into their new home in July of 2018, these homeowners have really enjoyed their peaceful rural setting, especially the numerous campfires throughout all four seasons. The beautifully treed backyard hosts an abundance of wildlife and the fresh fallen snow announces the arrival of visitors, like blue jays, the classic Christmas red cardinal and a large flock of 13 wild turkeys!
Christmas traditions include listening to copious amounts of Christmas music, watching family favourite Holiday movies, cosy evenings by the fire or campfire with hot chocolate, and board game or card nights. The living room proudly displays a natural tree with coloured lights, sentimental hand me down ornaments from Mum, handmade ornaments from the boys and traditional treasures! There is also a large faux tree in the basement plus many seasonal and whimsical touches throughout this family home. Enjoy!
27 Allan Street, Carleton Place – House Number 3
Sitting on almost an acre in town fronting on the beautiful Mississippi River, you will find this gorgeous 3,500 square foot home. Built in 1917, this older Victorian has been completely renovated into a modern home while still retaining many of its original characteristics. The old lath and plaster walls and decorated plaster ceilings remain, as do the original hardwood floors and doors including the hardware. Although some old exterior brick is exposed on the inside, the exterior of the home plus interior fireplace have been modernized. An old feel to the home still remains with its dormer window style and welcoming front porch. There was an addition to the back of the home in 1980 and recently the addition of an in ground pool with interlock. The boathouse at the waters edge has also been fully finished. Previously owned by the Town’s Fire chief, along with the home next door, both homes were linked by cement paths for close family ties.
Christmas for this young energetic family, is celebrated in a big fashion beginning right after Halloween. The three young children can’t wait to be part of this adventure each year. The outside of the home gets the full attention of passers by with its many whimsical blow ups and twinkly lights. Several faux trees are showcased inside this lovely home, however for this family, nothing quite says Christmas like the smell of a freshly cut real tree!
Did you know??? Did you know? Deb Bigras said– This location was the home to a bottle factory at one time. We pulled many an old bottle from the river over the years. There was a large old mill stone that stuck out of the ground behind the house to show its history as well. The house was originally owned/built by Mort and Isabel Rogers from Perth. They built the grey bungalow for his aunt when she returned from New York City and looked after her in her retirement. My parents, Ken and Helen Drummond, were the next owners the grey bungalow and then this house as well. The two houses were always tied together and looked after as one property. This house had many extra features unusual for its time. For example : a cedar storage room for clothes and furs, a dumb waiter between the kitchen and a cold storage room, a laundry chute to a basement laundry area. Many wonderful family memories were made in this house!–Check out our new home every day on our Facebook page–https://www.facebook.com/carletonplacehousetour/
310 High Street, Carleton Place – House Number 4
This beautiful stone home, nicknamed the “Scottish Mansion” was built by Charles Bates, a local textile manufacturer one century ago this year! The home took an estimated four years to build and has had approximately 8 owners over its lifetime. This old girl sat vacant for upwards of 5 years, almost becoming a tear down until the current owners drove by in early 2010 and fell in love with her. They purchased their dream home with a vision and have been renovating ever since. Although there are still only minor renovations taking place, this gorgeous stone mansion has been completely renovated from top to bottom, inside and out. The current homeowners have lovingly restored as much of the original woodwork and character as possible while keeping an inviting and warm homey feel. In one word, this home is simply Amazing!
Since moving into their home, the owners have enjoyed decorating for all of the Holidays, Christmas being the most favourite. Every part of this lovely abode gets kissed with Christmas Cheer! The entire three story home is decorated from top to bottom…. even the laundry room! Multiple Christmas trees and an abundance of seasonal decor ranging from modern to antique, adorn this home for the Holidays, making it a must see for Christmas lovers alike!
242 High Street, Carleton Place – House Number 5
This beautiful red brick Victorian on High Street was built in 1892. There is a direct connection to the Findlay Family and their foundry, which was established in Carleton Place in 1860. In recent years it also operated as a Bed and Breakfast.
This home features a number of traditionally decorated rooms with original ceiling roses, double height baseboards and high ceilings. The front lounge features a large natural wood burning fireplace and supper large sofas to snuggle into. The traditional style continues into the dining room, in which a collection of Royal Worcester porcelain will be on display. You are then welcomed into the farm style kitchen with its very own snug overlooking the forest to the rear. The snug also provides access to the indoor pool and sauna. A switch to modern style, showcasing beautiful barn doors, welcomes you to the utility area and huge rear family room.
This gorgeous home was purchased in 2018 by a British couple as is evident by British memorabilia throughout the home plus various presentations honouring British Military Service from multiple generations of their family.
The feeling of Christmas at 242 High Street is in the air, with several trees and special treasures, but most of all the enjoyment revolves around the roaring fire in the lounge with the cherished company of family and friends!
91 High Street, Carleton Place – House Number 6
The current homeowners purchased their newly renovated home in November 2017. It may look like a new build, but it was actually built in 1910. The home was previously a much smaller chopped up duplex which was completely renovated from top to bottom. A large addition was added onto the back of the home allowing for an absolutely gorgeous kitchen, dining and play area on the ground floor thus enlarging the second floor to accommodate huge bedrooms and bathrooms! The gorgeous kitchen and expansive open concept is what sold the current homeowners! The home boasts many large windows and tons of space for entertaining family and friends. The view of Town Hall and the Mississippi River from the second story windows is wonderful. Being originally from Nova Scotia, there is a beachy coastal influence throughout this lovely home!
These homeowners grew up with many family Christmas traditions which they continue to share with their young children today. Yummy cookies, themed Christmas dinners such as Hawaiian, Ugly Christmas Sweater and an East Coast Christmas with a Jigg’s Dinner! This traditionally Newfoundland dinner consists of boiled vegetables, salt beef and a turkey!
They love to decorate for Christmas, displaying multiple themed trees; including a peacock inspired tree, a vintage tree with ornaments from the 40’s and 50’s, woodland decor and many reindeer. Look for an iconic piece of Carleton Place Christmas history, on loan for the tour…..the 40 years plus, Barker Funeral Home reindeer, pulling Santa in his sleigh!
104 Old Mill Lane, Appleton – House Number 7
In the 1800’s, The Teskey Family immigrated from Ireland & settled along the banks of the Mississippi River. They were entrepreneurs with a vision. They built a town starting with a Saw Mill, then a Gris Mill for processing flour. However, it was their Woollen Mill, the ruins of which can still be seen today, that helped create the Town of
Teskeyville, a bustling village with 2 general stores, a blacksmith shop, several mills and many homes along the Mississippi River. The Woollen Mill continued operating for the next 100 years.
In 1842, the Teskey family built this stately limestone manor (1 of 3) with 4 fireplaces, a full 75 years before electricity revolutionized households. Fast forward 177 years, add indoor plumbing, heat and electricity and no one roughs it here anymore. Today, Teskeyville is now the village of Appleton and the 1842 limestone manor is now “The Old MIll Manor”, a five bedroom vacation rental catering High Tea lunches, Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. Since 2015, they’ve proudly hosted over 4,000 guests worldwide, from Dubai, Germany, France, Japan, the U.S. and all over Canada.
“The Old Mill Manor” welcomes you to join them for a Charles Dickens inspired Christmas!
169 Hillcrest Drive, Appleton – House Number 8
This stunning home in Appleton, is situated on the beautiful Mississippi River overlooking Appleton Bay. Purchased by the current homeowners in September 2015, this mid 1980’s home has received a complete modern day transformation. Upon entering this beautifully reimagined home, you will be greeted with water views, glass railings and the living rooms two story stone fireplace. The oak flooring and bannisters have been sanded and re stained adopting a more contemporary flair. The kitchen was completely renovated, amalgamating the four season sunroom. The basement was finished and the main floor master bath has just been transformed into quite the show stopper! A gorgeous tree trunk coffee table commands attention in the sunken living room along with the beautiful fireplace and the two story windows flooding the home with natural light. Every room in this updated home embraces the waterfront! Retaining most of the original trees, the outside of the home has gained the addition of a swimming pool, new deck/patio and hot tub.
The lady of the house inherited her love of Christmas from her mother and she proudly displays her own handmade wreath on the front door. Czech heritage also plays a big part in family traditions. Blue and white glass ornaments from Grandma and Grandpa are showcased on the white tree in the breakfast nook. The tall natural tree in the living room is lovingly referred to as “school age chic…mostly adorned by handmade masterpieces from their young children. You will find beautiful garlands, a Victorian village, more trees and touches of Christmas top to bottom in this lovely abode.
HOUSE 9—623 CARL LEE AVENUE Mississippi Mills, Ontario K0A1A0
The “Christmas in Carleton Place House Tour” is pleased to announce that this BONUS HOUSE is also open for tour goers during the entire duration of this year’s House Tour! Although this BONUS HOUSE is not on the tour ticket, tour goers will revive an information sheet at each and every home on this year’s Tour! Enjoy!!!
Located on just over one acre of land in the peaceful neighbourhood of Monroe Meadows, you will find this gorgeous seven thousand square foot, three level family home. Originally designed locally by Davies Design Limited of Carleton Place, this custom home was built for the Bolton family in 2009.
The current homeowners have very much enjoyed living here for the past two years. They fell in love with the location, the homes 16’ high ceiling in the living room which includes a stone fireplace surrounded by palladium windows, the gorgeous kitchen, the five bedrooms and four baths….but the icing on the cake was the radiant in floor heating!
This home is truly an example of high tech luxury living at its best! Control 4, are the electronic brains of this home and uses smart phone technology to control the doors, lights, furnace, camera’s, music, plus monitor the sump pump levels at all time.
Being a military family for the past 35 years, has caused this family to move numerous times. These multiple moves have resulted in family members being spread out all over Canada, making Christmas such an important time to gather and reconnect with family and friends.
When these homeowners were young and had limited funds, they learned to make Christmas special. Handcrafting gifts for one another, still holds more meaning to them today. Because of the frequent relocations, extended family weren’t always around,
especially during Christmastime. Each year, the five children would create a special new Christmas tree ornament to proudly display on the tree. This became their family tradition.
Today, their most special tree, is the one holding all of these lovingly handmade treasures. Each and every wonderful creation holds a memory of being together and the history of what
happened that year. You will notice many older and treasured decorations throughout this lovely abode that have also lasted throughout the years. These homeowners wish you and yours a very “Merry Christmas”!

Jonathan Amodeo– Photo
Thanks to the Amodeo family, Michael Rikley, the Mississippi Valley Textile Museum and all the volunteers for a very successful Home and Garden Show yesterday in Almonte. I was honoured as a Carleton Place resident to be able to work at The Glen Estate On Saturday. It’s all about two towns working together as one for the betterment of our community. A little bit of Downton Abbey in our community was on view Saturday.
A one-of-a-kind 19th century Tudor Revival mansion revitalized as a destination event venue. The Glen Estate is regular host to boutique-style weddings, concerts, elegant cocktail parties, yoga retreats, and dozens of film productions.
Situated on a sprawling 20 acres in the town of Almonte, the Glen is a convenient 45 minute drive west from downtown Ottawa, Ontario. Book your event or production here and have access to the main floor of our lovingly maintained heritage mansion, and versatile, stately grounds sure to create a memorable experience in any season. For all information please click here.
Author’s note— There is no doubt I live in the wrong century. Been told that all my life. Saturday touched my heart meeting all visitors and talking about history. Saturday will always be in my memory no question. Thank you to all for your kindness. Photo by my good friend Rose Mary Sarsfield.

HOUSE NUMBER 1 – 1258 7th LINE, BECKWITH
The “Auld Manse” dates back to the 1834-1839 period and welcomes visitors to one of the earliest 19th Century Beckwith brown limestone homes in the township. This Georgian cottage style home was proudly built by the Scottish congregation of the Church of the Cross Keys for the first minister and is truly a historic landmark. A festive glimpse of bygone times…a sleigh will greet you in the front of the homestead and entice you through the front entrance with its rare carved exterior fanlight.
The early 1800’s character of the Manse has been lovingly brought back and decorated with holiday touches. The surviving interior features include: a ceiling with 24 foot original wood pegged log beams, four stone arched design fireplaces, with some original accessories and interior oak shutters with folding panels for the five main windows. This lovely abode is the picture perfect backdrop for displaying this family’s many Christmas keepsakes!
HOUSE NUMBER 2 – 238 LYNDHURST STREET
These homeowners purchased and began renovating their custom side-split home only two years ago. Attracted by its Prairie School and Mid-Century design elements, plus its location opposite the Mississippi River, they embraced an opportunity to breathe new life into this unique home. The house was built in 1964, by local builders Scissons and Sneden, for one of the founders of Leigh Instruments.
Much structural work is complete with interior improvements well underway. Formerly a six bedroom home, one bedroom has been reconfigured as a dressing room for the master bedroom which includes a new ensuite. Two more bedrooms have become home offices…the remaining are guest rooms.
Several projects are scheduled for the next couple of years, including renovating the sunroom, updating the basement games room, new patios, pathways, low maintenance perennial boarders and a garden shed.
Entering this beautiful home, you are welcomed by a stunning Christmas tree in the front foyer landing, setting a festive tone for what lies ahead. Enjoy!
HOUSE NUMBER 3 – 92 MUNRO STREET
Built around 1894, this home features wide plank pine flooring, a wood stove and stained glass harkening back to when the home was owned by the Leach family. Facing northwest, the kitchen basks in the morning sunlight, allowing the garden and the rest of the home to be warmed by the afternoon sun. Since moving to Carleton Place in 2016, these homeowners have gently uncovered this special jewel, while adding a mix of antiques as well as textiles from world travels. Christmas comes alive in this lovely abode with colour schemes of blues, silvers and touches of gold, beckoning visitors to warm their hands by the wood stove and celebrate this wondrous Holiday season!
HOUSE NUMBER 4 – 136 MUNRO STREET
These fun loving homeowners recently down sized from a two acre country property to a more manageable lot. They moved into their brand new, open concept bungalow complete with finished basement, in 2014. The lady of the house is quite the avid Santa collector and will be the first to admit to perhaps having an addiction of some sort!
The homeowners Christmas decorating theme tends to gravitate towards traditional, showcasing lovingly handmade ornaments from children and grandchildren, alongside vintage ornaments from their parents. Lovers of travel, a Christmas souvenir is a must to bring home and if there happens to be a Santa on this special keepsake… It’s a true bonus. These homeowners are extremely thrilled to share their proclaimed Santa home with you for such a wonderful cause!
HOUSE NUMBER 5 – 73 BECKWITH STREET
Built in 1910, this lovely Victorian brick home is a shabby chic and Christmas lovers dream! Its brick fireplace adorned with ornate cover, was originally heated with coal. The fireplace room as it’s lovingly referred to, is the favourite room in the winter months, as the homeowners have always enjoyed the warmth of a real wood fire.
Extensive renovations have occurred since these homeowners took possession five years ago. The upstairs bathroom was renovated with the addition of a claw foot tub… hoping to have given this home what it once had, and the sink was purchased from an old farmhouse in Perth. The servants staircase was recently reopened near the kitchen which was completely reborn with the addition of new cupboards, countertop and finally a dishwasher. The chandelier in the dining room purchased from a flea market in Stittsville, has many friends all throughout this fabulous home! There are multiple Christmas trees adorned throughout, and the lady of the house works her gifted talent everywhere!
HOUSE NUMBER 6 – 337 MOFFATT STREET
This Victorian brick home was originally sold for $100.00 back in 1868 and still maintains most of its original glory with a few modern updates. The current homeowners have lived in this beautiful home for the past 20 years. They were gifted the homes historical records from Town Hall by friends when they purchased the home in 1997. At one time in history, the home was a car dealership! The homeowners have added extensive gardens in the front and backyard, which can be viewed and enjoyed from the kitchen, which was an add on several years ago. These owners are antique collectors, obvious in the decor which includes primitive antiques and original paintings.
The high ceilings of the home allow these owners to showcase many themed Christmas trees. They often have upwards of 15 trees, including a 10 footer displayed in the dining room! Simple Christmas decor, bringing back memories of what might have been enjoyed when the house was first built is how these homeowners enjoy decorating, with a few more modern surprises too! Cheers!
HOUSE NUMBER 7 – 286 OAKLAND CRESCENT, GLEN ISLE
This 80’s built Cape Cod home is in beautiful Glen Isle. The current homeowners fell in love with this beauty two years ago and have created a home filled with calming eclectic style. They welcome you to their special home with gorgeous newly installed front steps, beautiful tiled entry hall and new hardwood flooring. They have also added a welcoming brick faced bar in the family room, next to the huge kitchen complete with sitting area. The homes gorgeous designer kitchen is what originally captured their hearts. The lady of the house is a gifted designer and you will find various nods to the husband’s birthplace, including a Scottish Santa bought on a trip to Glen Coe along with a kilted nutcracker. Christmas is the time to add these treasures and much more to the prints, pillows and little reminders of the U.K., where the couple met. Most importantly, this home is a comfortable and welcoming place for children, grandchildren, (their parents on occasion too! )…extended family and friends. Whether it’s time on the back patio, Christmas dinner, or the annual Burns Night Celebration, this home can lovingly accommodate all!
124 Wilson Street, Appleton
Situated on two acres, overlooking the Mississippi River, this beautiful stone mansion is one of three, built in Appleton by the Teskey brothers in the mid 1800’s. Wealthy industrialists, they hired the best stone craftsmen to build their elegant homes, featuring spacious high ceiling living areas, servants quarters and carriage houses. This amazing home has five fireplaces, five staircases, bake oven and many more features. The bedrooms have been reduced from eight to five over the years and the carriage house was converted to a gym/games room wing.
There is also a separate two story barn/garage building beside the home. The current residents, believe it or not, are only the 3rd owners to date, purchasing the home from the Collie family in 1993.
Christmastime officially welcomed these homeowners in a wonderful way! The front doorbell rang, mom answering the door with her three small boys in tow…big eyed fascination, at the straw filled wagon drawn by a team of Clydesdales. With the Mississippi River as a backdrop, twenty plus voices started carolling. They stood in wonder with huge snowflakes falling…a Norman Rockwell moment, if ever there was one!!!

Merrickville’s 11th annual House and Garden Tour sponsored by Holy Trinity Anglican Church is to be held June 18, 2016
This year’s tour will transport ticketholders through a wondrous metamorphosis of some of the areas most impressive and historic homes and gardens. It’s a fundraiser for the local church and features a number of historic houses – including one built on property that was original deeded to Benedict Arnold! The five gardens are equally wonderful examples of the best of both past and present, one having been featured in a recent CBC mini-series.
The Blockhouse Museum (operated by the Merrickville and District Historical Society) will be open throughout the House and Garden Tour (and for the rest of the summer, too!). Your expert guides will be dressed in period costume and, once inside, visitors will experience life in Merrickville during the early 1800s.
There are a total of four homes on the tour this year.
The house is on Kilmarnock Island. The land on which the house was built was given to the sons of Benedict Arnold for their father’s help in the American revolution. They owned the land until the 1830’s but never lived on it.
Built in 1885, the home has been lovingly restored and decorated in an eclectic style. One of the home-owners, a talented artist, has decorated the home using many of her own pieces.
The Stephen Merrick house, erected in 1844 in Merrickville by Stephen Merrick, son of the founder of Merrickville, is recognized as a Canadian historic site and part of the architectural heritage of the Rideau Corridor by Parks Canada. The cut-stone front of ashlar.
This newly built 2-storey apartment is housed in an historic building on St. Lawrence Street above “Anarchy Studio”. The clever use of space is a must-see for anyone interested in decorating a bijoux.
Car aficionados will be delighted by the handsome array of antique automobiles which will be parked in front of each home and garden. Thank you to the Ottawa MG Club and Barry Phillips.
Two of the featured gardens are situated in Burritts Rapids, a sister community to Merrickville a few kilometres away. Burritts Rapids was founded in the 1790’s. Old photographs echo the historic architecture of this picturesque community which has not changed much in over 200 years. “The shops have gone, but the structures have been carefully retained as private homes.”
These two gardens have been featured in Canadian Gardening magazine.
Olivia Mills honed her gardening skills at her father’s and mother’s side in Ireland. The John Strahan French House is the oldest dwelling (circa 1820) in the charming village of Burritt’s Rapids.
Built circa 1832, Burritt Farm was erected on land granted to Daniel Burritt the Younger on May 17, 1802. “[The house is an] excellent example of stone cottages that were built in the Rideau Canal corridor following the completion of the Rideau Canal.
This Elgin Street home and garden sits on land originally owned by the Mirrick family. The Edwardian style house was built in the 1880’s. The owners, Joelle Schmid and Nick Previsich, purchased the house in 2012 and gardening quickly became a passion of theirs.
The Samuel Pearson House on St. Lawrence Street is an elegant stone double perched on the corner of Colbourne Street. Designated heritage, the house was built in 1866 by the skilled stonemasons who built the Rideau Canal.
The north garden greets the visitor with a sense of a lovely, calm oasis in a busy village. The home-owner was drawn by the elegance and size of the stone house when creating this garden 15 years ago.
Art, Jazz And The Garden 2016 Come and enjoy Art & Jazz in the gardens at the award winning Rideau Woodland Ramble again on June 18th 2016 between 12pm and 5 pm. Members of MAG Artists as well as guest artists, and Red Jazz will be on hand.
I have found, through years of practice, that people garden in order to make something grow; to interact with nature; to share, to find sanctuary, to heal, to honour the earth, to leave a mark. Through gardening, we feel whole as we make our personal work of art upon our land.

I waited a few days to write this blog after another beloved Hallmark Hall of Fame movie was viewed this week. Today I still questioned whether I could get through typing this without crying. I am a chronic crier, and many mundane things make me tear up. Emotional crying is kind of like nature’s way of naturally regulating our moods and general health vs our modern day drug companies. I know from a personal standpoint that a good Hallmark commercial or moment cry now-and-again is a form of emotional cleansing.
Why does anything from Hallmark make you so emotional? Hallmark movies are designed to make us cry, even if we don’t identify with them. I think every marketing/advertising student should be required to study Hallmark movies and their saccharin-card-giving-commercials. When people look forward to the commercials during a television movie or program, you know you’re doing something right. Romance is honest and makes you think about your significant other, when you are supposed to be thinking about something else. I know I am a better person when I let myself have the time for romance and for love. I thought there were very few of us out there until last year I met Jane Tunks of the Christmas House on Nelson Street in Carleton Place.
What makes people collect things? The most common reason is that they like the items they collect, and get pleasure from it. At Christmas there may be other reasons for collecting, such as gathering ornaments as keepsakes for your children or grandchildren. Things that bring back memories of wonderful people and wonderful times. Life is full of memories worth saving if you think about it. Jane Tunks and her family love Christmas and that is why they collect. Honestly, you would have to go to dozens of homes to see a collection like this Carleton Place family has.
In a world where there is so much sadness and so much to be afraid of, good things do happen to people. We haven’t lost romance in the digital age, but we may be neglecting it. In doing so, “out-of-date” art forms like watching Hallmark movies and collecting Christmas ornaments are taking on new importance. Romance will always be something we can find, even if we’re not consciously looking for it. Join the Carleton Place Hospital Foundation Christmas House Tour and feel the love at the Tunk’s family home. After all, it’s the house with a heart.
Organizer Jane Tunks will artfully squeeze more than two dozen trees into her own home for the tour.
Each year the Carleton Place Hospital Foundation Christmas House Tour serves that delicious warm cider. Bet you want to know how to make it.
Really?
Really?
Not so fast!
BUT I can give you The Pioneer Woman’s recipe and a story about the pioneers of Lanark County or all about the house tour while you sit down and have a cup. To taste the real deal you will have to come on the Carleton Place Hospital Foundation Christmas House Tour. But don’t try and bribe the homeowners for that recipe– it’s not going to happen– that one is going down to the grave- trust me! Don’t forget you will get a cookie too!
(Adapted from AllRecipes.com.)
Place cinnamon sticks, ground cloves, allspice berries, orange peel, and lemon peel in a medium saucepan. Pour in maple syrup and apple juice, then bring to almost a boil. Reduce the heat to its lowest setting and simmer for 30 minutes. Remove from heat and serve in mugs.
(Add a splash of rum for an adults-only version! Yum, yum, yum.)
Every year, generous homeowners from the Carleton Place area loan their houses to benefit The Carleton Place Hospital Foundation. Home owners transform their homes to showcase stunning holiday décor and entertainment ideas. This year is no exception, and this wonderful event, December 5th and 6th, is returning for it’s fourth consecutive year. In the past three years, our tour has helped raise much needed funding towards the purchase of patient care equipment.
Each home is decorated for the Christmas season offering visitors an opportunity to soak up the holiday vibe and be inspired to decorate their own homes for the festive season. With the assistance of local florists: The Floral Boutique, The Blossom Shop and Petals and Paint Florist and Home Decor, the homes will be decked out with festive trims and greenery to delight the eye and stimulate the senses.
Eight beautiful homes will grace this year’s tour, to inspire your inner decorator. Christmas is all about families and delicious cookies and hot apple cider will be served in each home. The tour will present an interesting mix of historical, waterfront and architecturally unique homes.
*The Fallowfield Road home in Ashton is a six acre property that came back from the ashes of a devastating fire. It took hands to build a house and hearts to build this open concept home which allows for large gatherings and friends to visit. Your Christmas ornaments become history and theirs miraculously survived the fire. The children’s handmade decorations became their best presents, so come visit the presence of their happy family all wrapped around the boughs of their Christmas tree.
*The house on Hillcrest Drive in Appleton was discovered by the owners on an Almonte house tour in 1984. The basic design of the home was crafted by the owners themselves and built by Almonte builder David Barr. Family makes this house a home, and so does the view of the wonderful sunsets from their windows. Christmas is a time that holds all time together. Come hear about their Christmas traditions with their immediate and their extended UK family in the house that sits by the Appleton Bay.
*Concert gatherings and dinner parties are abound in this Wilson Street home that was built in 1972 in Appleton. The open concept house was renovated by award winning designer Beaulieu Design. Home is where the story begins, and come see the fawn, flora and nature that can be seen through their large picturesque windows. Joy to the world says the story of their eclectic decor found from their travels to Italy and Bali, so don’t miss this lovely home all decked out for the holidays.
*It is peripheral to that which we find important about history, especially in architecture and Elliot House on Bell Street is no exception. The Gothic revival architecture styled home is rumoured to have been built for William Stephenson, a Road Master, who worked for the Canada Central Railway. Old places have soul, so come enjoy the results of their 5 year renovation project. A wonderful dining room that spreads into the living room to host their Christmas feasts is a must to see. Get the feeling you get on Christmas Eve when you view their extensive vintage glass ornaments.
*Happiness grows at our own firesides like this home built in 1890 on Emily Street. Renovated with family and friends in the mid 1990s, it is very obvious they had a dream. The home owner’s attention to detail and thoughtful touches are apparent throughout each room in this house. There will be ‘before pictures’ in many rooms, and feel the warmth of the lovely sun room and renovated kitchen with handcrafting cabinetry, tin ceiling and fossil backsplash decked out in Holiday cheer.
*Experience the “love at first sight” house on Lake Park Road perched atop a small incline. Their windows might change your thoughts and change your world after you hear the tales of bird sightings and wildlife that have been seen through the windows. Decor is eclectic, traditional and new, but this home is where life begins and love never ends, and it’s all about family for the holidays.
*A house is not just an important thing – it’s everything, and this log home on Lake Park Road was built in Quebec in 1818 and moved to its present site in 1989. With visions of Currier and Ives, Christmas means decorating their cabin with natural tree pine and spruce boughs. Even the log stove will be crackling while stockings will be hung. Laughter is timeless, imagination has no age, and dreams are forever in the warmth of this wonderful cabin.
*You cannot attend this Holiday house tour without visiting the “Christmas House” on Nelson Street. The Tunk’s home is a complete Yule season wrapped into a package of rooms, consisting of 26 themes and decorated trees. Over 650 ornaments and a spruce named Bruce brings family and friends into a world of togetherness. Jane Tunks begins decorating right after Halloween, and has1,000s of ornaments (all of which have special meaning), garland and more. If ornaments were snowflakes, Jane would have a blizzard going on in her home. Come experience her wonderful storm of Christmas.
