Doug McCarten sent me these letters  from my grandparents George and Amy Buchanan…to his sister and brother-in-law in Arizona in 1921

This was a letter from his Grandmother and Grandfather to his Grandfather’s sister and brother-in-law who had moved to Arizona in 1917. I am forwarding it as it provides a snapshot of what life was like on the farm in Appleton in 1921!

The Appleton farm as it is a beautiful stone house right on the Mississippi just downstream from the Golf course on the other side! 150 acres and 5 barns originally but some gone now. When we sold the farm when moving to town it was sold to John and Edith Clark and was used by them as a Chinchilla farm. They became close friends with my Mom and Dad and I always enjoyed visiting! John died many decades ago and Edith lived there in her own!–Doug McCarten

Thanks Doug– we are now documenting this forever so the information will be out there.

I have been writing about downtown Carleton Place Bridge Street for months and this is something I really want to do. Come join me in the Domino’s Parking lot- corner Lake Ave and Bridge, Carleton Place at 11 am Saturday September 16 (rain date September 17) for a free walkabout of Bridge Street. It’s history is way more than just stores. This walkabout is FREE BUT I will be carrying a pouch for donations to the Carleton Place Hospital as they have been so good to me. I don’t know if I will ever do another walking tour so come join me on something that has been on my bucket list since I began writing about Bridge Street. It’s always a good time–trust me.
