George Gomme came to this area from the UK when he was barely 10 years old. He didn’t have any choice he told everyone as he was a foster child. He went to school here and then on to Queen’s University. After all that education all he could get for a job was 20 bucks a month working for a farmer. So he took a chance in the lumbering business and when he married he teamed up with his father in law and formed a partnership in a retail lumbering business. After his father in law died he continued the business with his wife and son until he changed his residence to the Royal York Hotel and was a provincial member for Lanark and the provincial minister of highways. Three generations of the Gomme family were mayor of Almonte. Mr Gomme, his son and his wife’s father.
