People of Lanark County– Sharon from The Christmas Hut

On October 30, 2017, word was out that Carleton Place’s Christmas Hut might not be opening this year as they had no donations. Then on November 2, great news was issued.

****UPDATE***
Many amazing people are trying to keep Christmas hut open again this year…. SOOOOOO if we get the donations , before December 1st , I will be able to open again …thank you ladies

A wonderful lady named Sharon runs the Christmas Hut. She works full time and in between family duties she has taken the time to set up The Christmas Hut in Carleton Place. It was an idea that came to her and a friend while chatting late one night. Using a large shed owned by the Lighthouse Church she gathered donations of new and gently used items that would be suitable gifts for men, women and children.

Sharon opens the “Hut” as her shifts allows with the help of high school students needing community hours, and tables loaned by Rental Village. Children, approximately 200 last year, come in with a food donation are then allowed to shop, assisted by a volunteer, for siblings, parents, grandparents. Each item is one food donation for the food bank.

All kids are invited up to the ages of 14 and 15. As Sharon said: even at 13, 14, 15 most kids only have babysitting, flyer delivery or lawn mowing type jobs, so still don’t have a lot of money for gifts.

The kids are so proud of what they choose by themselves with only guidance to the appropriate shopping area. Then the help wraps the gifts at no charge.  All this to benefit the food bank and children–showing them that it is truly the thought that counts.

This will all take place at 355 Moffat Street, in the small office building in the parking lot of the Free Methodist Church in Carleton Place.
