Have you ever visited the Canadian Co-operative Wool Growers company in Carlton Place?  It is an amazing place located in the old Canadian Pacific Railway workshop and roundhouse, which was used  by the railway from 1890 till 1939. The WoolGrowers Co-operative moved into the building in 1940. They process over three million pounds of wool every year and we should be proud that we as the town of Carleton Place are the only people that process wool in Canada. That’s right-all the wool come here!

For more than 70 years, 142 Franktown Road in Carleton Place has been the go-to place for wool! In 1940 the Canadian Co-operative Wool Growers Limited purchased a large, limestone building from the Canadian Pacific Railway.

Today’s photo is of workers taking a break at the CPR Engine Repair Shops. Built in 1890 as a round house and repair shop for the Canadian Pacific Railway, it employed about 200 workers. After operations were moved to Smiths Falls, the building was purchased by the Canadian Cooperative Woolgrowers. Iron tracks from the turntable in the roundhouse were sold as scrap to help the war effort in 1940. Can you help us identify any of these men?–Carleton Place and Beckwith Heritage Museum

Transportation between the CP Farmers' Market and Lambs Down Park Festival.JPG

Photo-Through the eyes of Cathie Hawkins McOrmond

The end of the Civil War led into the Industrial Revolution, and changes resulted throughout the barnyard. Instead of performing field work by hand, farmers used modern machinery to cut hay, plant corn, and bind oats. Inside the farm kitchen, the wood-burning cook stove and the Mason jar made food preparation and preservation much easier.

ahorseww.jpg

The large barns were the center of daily activity on turn-of-the-century farms. Most farmers used the barn for multiple purposes, like storing hay and oats, stabling animals, milking cattle, and storing tools and equipment. Farmers harvested hay in June, July, and August, and then stored it in the barn to feed the animals during the winter months. The haymow, in the center of the barn, held more than 30 tons of loose hay.

By 1900, most farmers used draft horses for hard labor. The 1,800 pound animals plowed the fields for corn and oats, planted the crops, cultivated the fields, brought in the hay crop, pulled wagons of field corn, hauled manure. Farms would not have been as successful without the aid of the horses.

Settlers brought heavy horses with them, including the Clydesdale to pull ploughs, wagons, and carts or to provide power on sweeps, treadmills, and other farm machinery. Of all the heavy horse breeds, the Clydesdale is the lightweight and the most intelligent. The horse was an excellent farm worker and its sound feet made it suitable also for town haulage.

Rare Breeds Canada now lists the Clydesdale as an “At Risk” breed with 151-500 registered in Canada.

Saturday June 18TH from 10am to 3pm.

This is a non-gated event and is FREE to enter the grounds, demonstrations are FREE to view and food and merchandise vendors will be on site offering items for sale

The Carleton Place (BIA) isn’t sheepish about letting people know that Carleton Place is the largest distribution centre for lamb’s wool in Canada!

In celebration of the town’s woolly existence, the BIA and the Woolgrowers are joining forces on Saturday, June 18th to host the BIA Lambs Down Park Festival. The BIA is working with the Wool Growers in an effort to bring awareness to the public about the tremendous heritage attraction we have in Carleton Place, the festival will run from 10 am until 3 pm on the Wool Growers property.

Meet the BIA

cpbia-logo.png

The Carleton Place Business Improvement Association began in 1979. The business community requested that the downtown be designated as an improvement area through municipal bylaws and provincial legislation and the BIA was formed.
The Carleton Place BIA promotes the downtown as a business and shopping area, not just a group of individual shops, restaurants and offices. Our mandate is twofold; beautification and promotion. Our ongoing floral beautification, seasonal banner program, and decorative lighting, add to the vibrant streetscape. We use promotional activities and special events to keep downtown Carleton Place foremost in the public’s mind as an attractive, pleasant place to shop, to be entertained, to work and to live.

bia_bucks

Count correctly what’s in a jar and win BIA bucks! What are BIA BUCKS?

A BIA Buck is our standard dollar used on a regular basis by the consumers in our community. BIA Bucks are an economic booster to our BIA members and enable consumers to contribute to BIA retailers. So that means shop till you drop on the BIA!!

All participating businesses within the BIA district can accept the BIA currency and will be provided full reimbursement by the BIA office.

What could be better than friends and cake?
