Bill Brunton, formerly from Carleton Place has a mystery on his hands. Why was there was a staircase and a door leading to nowhere in his childhood home on Moffat Street in Carleton Place? We are both thinking roof fire, and in doing some research this morning I came across a big fire on the corner of Charlotte and Moffat Street. In August of 1949, a fire of an undetermined origin destroyed the Archie Hudson Auto Parts and garage at the corner of Charlotte and Moffat Street at 3 pm on a Sunday afternoon. Loss was estimated at between $12,00 and $15,000.
The blaze broke out on the east side of the two storey frame building in a pile of baled paper which was stored in a small room. Within a few minutes the entire building was engulfed and the firemen could do little to bring the fire under control. The alarm was turned in by Rev. Gordon Taylor, and by the time the firemen arrived the building was on fire from end to end. The firemen poured water on the flames for nearly two hours before the fire was extinguished. Residents in the area used lawn hoses on their roofs because of the danger. Mr. Hudson had no insurance.
JP Hawkins–My Grandmother lived right across from here on the NE corner of Charlotte & Moffat. I lived there as well for a period of time during the late 50s. I distinctly recall a building at that time, which seemed to be an automotive repair facility of some sort. The rear end of the building backed right up to Charlotte.
