Food for Thought–One for Smiths Falls?

Proposed idea for Rideau Canal in Smiths Falls to boost tourism

June 28, 2016 by

There is a new tourism attraction being proposed for Smiths Falls along the Rideau Canal.

The plan which is in its early stages would see turning the unused lock near Centennial Park into a sort of amphitheatre, or sight for other events.

Mayor Shawn Pankow talked about it at last week’s council meeting. He says he wanted to keep Council in the loop, even though the project is still in its infancy. Pankow has wanted to explore possible uses for the old locks which were replaced by newer models, ever since he’s been setting up the annual festival of lights in Victoria Park in December. He calls the area which is at both the heart of the town and the Canal system, underutilized.

There would be an educational component too as it would become the only lock on the canal system that tourists could explore and examine its construction.
The project is expected to be discussed at a future meeting.

Our consideration for an amphitheatre in Carleton Place has been on the books since 2012. It was turned down by Parks and Rec back in March and followed up same by our council. Smiths Falls has the locks but we have our town jewel–the Mississippi River and Lake. Are we really doing the Meet me on the Mississippi?

Still hear talks– but from a distance. Food for thought.
