In the cold darkness shortly before dawn on Thursday November 15, 1918, after an 11-
day 200-kilometer cross-country odyssey, Lance-Corporal Robert Paul, crawling on all fours, within meters of a German border guard, slipped across the Dutch frontier and regained his freedom after 18 months as a Prisoner of War. During the First World War approximately 3,300 Canadian soldiers were taken prisoner on the Western Front.
