Paul Sterling from Hoquiam, WA. emailed yesterday and said this:
I recently found my Great Grandmother was born at Greenock Swamp farm settled by my family in 1823 on C5 L26W Lanark Co. from a military grant, shown in the painting above.
Now I’m told there were several. One may also be lot 35 sec 8 Greenock Township.
The painting hung in my adopted grandma’s bedroom and then my Mothers, and now I have it. We may find out who the missing father was. Note the large bottom matte with no signature. Thursday we get it redone and the mystery may be solved.
Can you help me find an early map showing the location?

Greenoch Township is located in Bruce County in Western Ontario. The “swamp’ term fits insofar as that township is very swampy. Here is a link to a lots and concession map for the township (late 1800s)http://digital.library.mcgill.ca/countyatlas/bru-m-greenock.htm
Lot 26 concession 5 is right in the middle of the swampiest area.
Several Lanark county families migrated from Lanark County to Bruce County… and several of their descendants continued to migrate west from there. They may have initially settled in Lanark, then moved on to find better prospects. That could be the source of the family lore of Greenoch Twp being in Lanark County.
Did they sail fro Geenock Scotland? Was it Lanark Township, Lanark County?
