The Spirit of Carleton Place -Shotgun with the Sky Pilots of Carleton Place PT.1

Yesterday through the graciousness of the Sky Pilots of Carleton Place, Bill and Carole Flint, Steve and I got to see Carleton Place first hand through the skies. The uncontrolled skies that is. I had no idea that the air above is regulated into classes. Smaller planes fly in uncontrolled airspace. What is that?

Uncontrolled airspace is airspace where an Air Traffic Control (ATC) service is not deemed necessary or cannot be provided for practical reasons. According to the airspace classes set by ICAO both class F and class G airspace are uncontrolled. It is the opposite of controlled airspace which the big guys fly in.

ATC does not exercise any executive authority in uncontrolled airspace, but may provide basic information services to aircraft in radio contact. Flight in uncontrolled airspace will typically be under VFR. Aircraft operating under IFR should not expect separation from other traffic: however in certain uncontrolled airspace this might be provided on an ‘as far as is practical’ advisory basis.

They fly a Cessna 172. The Cessna 172 Skyhawk is a four-seat, single-engine, high wing, fixed-wing aircraft made by the Cessna Aircraft Company. First flown in 1955, more Cessna 172s have been built than any other aircraft.

Measured by its longevity and popularity, the Cessna 172 is the most successful aircraft in history.  As of 2015, Cessna, and its partners, had built more than 43,000.

Bet you didn’t know that. Well, neither did I-thank god for Wikipedia— I am not that smart LOL.

So this is the other Sky Pilot of Carleton Place Carole Flint, or better yet, the First Officer of Air Flint.

They fly out of Russ Beach- the Smiths Falls/ Montague airport. I thought that airport was run by a bunch of rich muky mucks. Well, it isn’t. This airport is run by volunteers (mostly pilots) –and Smiths Falls-Montague Airport Commission is entrusted to the control and management of the landing grounds at the Russ Beach Smiths Falls/Montague Airport.

It is also home to Car Show and Top Speed Runway Challenge-Race the Runway which my son won last year. Okay, a mother does what a mother feels she has to do when she loves her kids, and Perry is probably shaking his head right now. But, if you have never been to this–better come on down August 13th–it’s fun for the whole family!

It’s not too often two members of a family get to ride down this runway–so, thanks to Bill and Carole for letting me experience what my son feels racing down this runway. Only this time, my hair did not turn grey going down it with Bill– like it does when I watch my son race.

Did you now Search and Rescue also drops in and says hi and does some training at the airport? So why am I telling you all this? Because like writing history every day, you need some background about our Sky Pilots of Carleton Place. So now on with the show as they say…

And we are off…

I know it’s a vertical video. I keep telling people to hold their iPhones sideways and I keep making the same mistakes. Blah!!
